CompTIA Certification Path 2026: Which Exam Should You Take First?

CompTIA doesn't use a tiered ladder like AWS, Microsoft, or Google Cloud — its real structure is three career tracks (Core, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity) plus a couple of standalone professional certifications. This guide covers the real sequencing logic and links to FirstTryExam's own practice-question banks for 14 CompTIA certifications currently available.

Core: the real starting point for IT support and helpdesk roles

A+ (split into two exams, Core 1 and Core 2) is CompTIA's traditional entry certification for IT support and helpdesk roles, and the most widely recognized of the four. ITF+ (IT Fundamentals) is aimed at complete beginners deciding whether IT is the right field at all, before committing to A+. Tech+ is CompTIA's newer core-level exam covering similar ground to ITF+ with an updated objectives set. Most candidates with any IT experience skip straight to A+ rather than taking all three.

Infrastructure: the usual path after A+

Network+ is the standard next step after A+ for candidates heading toward networking or systems administration roles. Server+, Cloud+, and Linux+ go deeper into specific infrastructure areas (server hardware/administration, cloud infrastructure, and Linux systems respectively) — typically taken after Network+, based on the specific infrastructure specialty you're targeting.

Cybersecurity: CompTIA's most in-demand track

Security+ is CompTIA's flagship cybersecurity certification — widely recognized, often required for U.S. government and defense-contractor security roles, and the usual entry point into the track (commonly taken after Network+ or alongside real hands-on experience). CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst) and PenTest+ (penetration testing) are intermediate certifications for specific security specialties, typically taken after Security+. SecurityX (formerly CASP+) is CompTIA's advanced, expert-level security certification, aimed at security architects and senior practitioners rather than candidates new to the field.

Standalone professional certifications

Project+ and Data+ sit outside the three main tracks — project management and data analytics fundamentals respectively — and don't have a fixed prerequisite relationship with A+, Network+, or Security+. Take either based on the role you're targeting, independent of where you are in the tracks above.
