Google Cloud Certification Path 2026: Which Exam Should You Take First?
Google Cloud doesn't use a literal "Fundamentals" tier the way AWS and Microsoft do — instead it has two role-agnostic entry points, then Associate and Professional tiers. This guide covers the real structure and links to FirstTryExam's own practice-question banks for 13 Google Cloud certifications currently available.
Entry-level: no coding or hands-on Google Cloud experience required
Cloud Digital Leader is Google's real equivalent to an entry-level "Fundamentals" exam — general cloud concepts and Google Cloud's product landscape, aimed at non-technical and technical candidates alike. Generative AI Leader is a newer, separate entry-level credential focused specifically on generative AI concepts and Google's AI product line, not a prerequisite for Cloud Digital Leader or vice versa.

- Generative AI Leader - Google Cloud Certified — 250 practice questions
Associate: the usual next step, role-specific from the start
Associate Cloud Engineer is the broadest of the three — general infrastructure and deployment skills, and the closest thing Google Cloud has to a universal "next step" after the entry-level exams. Associate Data Practitioner and Associate Google Workspace Administrator are role-specific from the start (data engineering vs. Workspace administration) — pick based on the actual role you're working toward.

- Associate Google Workspace Administrator - Google Cloud Certified — 420 practice questions
- Associate Cloud Engineer - Google Cloud Certified — 260 practice questions
Professional: Google Cloud's largest tier, one per specialization
Unlike AWS and Microsoft, Google Cloud puts most of its role-specific certifications directly at the Professional level rather than splitting them across Associate and Professional — there's a Professional exam for architecture, development, data engineering, machine learning, security, networking, databases, and DevOps. Most candidates go straight from Associate Cloud Engineer (or real equivalent experience) to the Professional exam matching their actual specialization.
